Making Paper Pots is so easy! And the great thing about it is that as soon as the plant has out grown its pot and is ready to be planted outside, you can plant the pot straight into the soil. Paper is bio-degradable – wonderful! This saves valuable time and limits the potential for damaging the roots of the plants.
You can make pots using glass jars (and this does work – I’ve tried it). However, I prefer to use a paper potter, costing £10.00 from
www.wigglywigglers.co.uk I bought one last year after discovering it in a fantastic
health food store in Bristol called Organique (172 Wells
Road, Totterdown, Bristol Tel. 0117 971 7932) and have since made hundreds of these little pots. – A £10 investment well spent!
To make the pots you will need:
Dry newspapers
Empty cardboard egg box
Empty jam jar or paper potter
Ruler
Pencil
Scissors
Here’s what you do:
1. Cut dry newspapers into strips (8cm wide x 57cm length approx) for paper potter – or if you are using an empty jam
jar, cut wider strips (12.5cm wide 20cm length)
2. Wrap loosely around the paper potter or jar and fold over the excess paper. (This is where the benefit of the paper potter really
comes in. It’s got a base which settles the newspaper into position to stop your soil from falling out the bottom!)
3. Carefully pull out the jam jar or paper potter. Hey presto! You have your own hand made plant pot!
4. Fill with soil, water gently and add your seeds.
5. You will need to put the pots onto a rigid surface – old cardboard egg boxes are brilliant (very nifty thrifty!)
simply cut the boxes in half (as shown) and stand the pots where the eggs used to be.
6. Remember to water your herb seeds – simply moisten and watch them grow!
